It’s absolutely critical to know how to do arm exercises for women the right way if you want to get toned arms as quickly as possible and to prevent serious injury.
If you are overweight and fat is stored in your thighs, butt or hips it’s no big deal. I mean, you can cover these areas up relatively easily and your clothing selection won’t be that restricted. But if you have flabby upper arms it’s a whole different ball game.
You might as well throw out all the sexy sleeveless dresses you have collecting dust in the back of your closet.
Flabby upper arms haunted me for a good portion of my life. I spent a small fortune and countless hours of blood, sweat and tears to get rid of them. My purse got lighter but my arms didn’t! I made a lot of mistakes along the way. My loss is your gain. I would like to share with you some outdated information “experts” use when prescribing arm toning exercises for women.
Here are 4 common misconceptions:
- You can not spot reduce your upper arms. This is only partially true. While you can’t tell your body where to lose fat first, you can tone your arms without subjecting yourself (and your purse) to a never-ending fat loss journey. I’ve seen countless women lose tons of fat and still not have toned arms! A lot of “experts” claim that fat loss or weight loss is the solution so that they can up-sell you on comprehensive (and expensive) programs. If all you want is to get rid of flabby upper arms a much simpler approach will do. The key is to firm up the muscle in your arm and then manipulate the amount of carbohydrate and water going in and out of it.
- Push ups are great for toning the back of the arms. The majority of the push up movement doesn’t even target your upper arms. It targets your chest! Why would you spend time on an exercise that doesn’t effectively target your problem area? Don’t waste your time doing push ups, there are much more effective exercises for eliminating arm flab. I can’t believe people claim this to be one of the best arm exercises for women!
- Triceps dips are a must. Ouch. I say ouch, because if you do triceps dips for long enough a joint in your shoulder can wear out. Once this joint gives in, surgery is the only way to fix it. According to “the smartest man in fitness,” Bill Hartman:
“The bench dip [same thing as a triceps dip] requires about 90 degrees of shoulder extension which exceeds normal shoulder extension by about 25 degrees. To achieve that much range of motion the scapula must tilt forward which is a pretty unstable position. This also means that the shoulder joint is unstable and increases demands on the rotator cuff especially the subscapularis. Over time this is a lot of undesirable stress leading to impingement of the cuff. This doesn’t even consider the stress on the AC joint. It’s also a crap exercise for overload.”
Stay away from dips like the plague.
- Triceps kick backs are great! Nothing could be further from the truth. This is the single most overrated exercise for arm toning. To do this exercise you have to lean forward while locking your elbow on your side. It is very hard to maintain this position when using heavier weights—your form will eventually deviate. By the way, heavier weights are critical for rapid arm toning (more on this in another article). You can do triceps kick backs still the cows come home, but your arms won’t change for a very long time. There are much better exercises for getting rid of flabby arms.
By knowing what not to do, you will save yourself a lot of time and stress, and even a potential injury. Getting rid of flabby upper arms doesn’t have to be a long and drawn out battle. It’s much easier than you think! And now you know what to look out for when someone starts recommending the wrong arm exercises for women. I agree… dips off a bench hurt my shoulders. But push-ups are great arm exercises… take a close grip push up for example, this hits the triceps hard and is a great move.
Indeed, close-grip push ups are more effective for targeting the triceps than regular push ups.
A problem with any type of push up, however, is that once you adapt (happens quickly) it becomes very hard to increase the load without assistance.

I have a a lot of fat in my arms–how to make skinny?? Do you nhave to have liposuction and plastic surgery to have skinny arms?
Hi Beverly,
As a starting point, I suggest you sign up for my free course on how to get toned arms. The sign up box is on the upper right hand corner of this screen.
And the good news is that you do NOT need liposuction or plastic surgery to get skinny arms. The only time you should consider surgery is if you have reached a “critical point” of excess skin. Most women wishing to get toned arms, however, do not fall into this category. So make sure you try exercise and diet first!
